Just yesterday we reported that production of the first-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS had come to an end after almost seven years of sales and more than 170,000 cars built, so it comes as quite a shock that we report today that Porsche has already built its 25,000th Panamera--a much more expensive model and one that has been on sale for only 10 months.

The feat is made all the more impressive given the fact that the Porsche Panamera, originally launched in September 2009, came onto the market during one of the worst sales downturns in automotive history.

The 25,000th Panamera, a ruby-red example fitted with a 300 horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 engine, will be delivered to a customer in the U.S.

The Panamera is built alongside the Cayenne SUV at Porsche’s plant in Leipzig, Germany, and from next year onwards the four-door sports car should appeal to an even wider audience thanks to the introduction of the new Panamera S Hybrid gasoline-electric version.

  1. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. Critics called the E65 7 -Series hideous, yet it became the most successful 7-Series ever. I'm noticing a trend here....

    Bad stuff?

  2. I do find it surprising that so many people buy this car, but not for the reason cited.
In fact, extrapolation of current sales rates would give 180,000 over 6 years - a very close match to the 170,000 CLSs sold over a similar period (CLS didn't really go on sale until 2005 according to yesterday's article, so it really was closer to 6 years than 7).

But we also know that newer model cars often sell better than older ones, so cars that are on their way out tend to have much lower sales than the same vehicle did when it first appeared.

Yes, this car was launched in a downturn, but it is satisfying a pent-up demand ... for ugly, overweight, practical, posing machines! (Note to Porsche: that having been said, if someone wants to give me the convertible version for a test drive, I'm prepared to change my tune).
