Round 1: Styling - 10 points

The look of a pony car is just as important as its bite, as many drivers want to be seen in the latest hot little domestic as much as they want to drive it. The bowtie-versus-oval battle is just a layer of this dimension of ownership.

Styled after the 1969 Camaro, and with a heavier dose of retro-modern than the Mustang, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro cuts a bold line through traffic on any city street. The low greenhouse, aggressive fenders, and huge wheels all shout the car's identity to passersby, who are often also deafened by the loud paint schemes.

With less throwback styling while still keeping the general feel of the early cars thanks to carefully chosen accents, such as the rear window panels, the grille and headlight area, and the fastback-like silhouette, the Mustang is a more conservative choice. It's not as flamboyantly pony-tastic, and it's not ashamed of that fact, either. For 2011, the car's lines have grown sleeker, better hiding the bulk that lies just beneath the surface.

One final factor to weigh: convertibles. Top-down cruising is, for some, the epitome of pony car style, so the drop-top element can't be dismissed. The 2011 Mustang will be available as a convertible, just as the 2010 Mustang was. The 2010 Camaro is coupe-only, and the wait for the Convertible won't be complete until March, 2011, giving the Mustang a clear advantage.

Verdict: It would have been a tie, but the convertible factor tips things in favor of the Mustang. Both cars look great in the flesh, though they do so in remarkably different ways. Round 1 score: 10-9 for the Mustang.

    Ford has said in this press release(http://www.ford.com/about-ford/news-announcements/press-releases/press-releases-detail/pr-2011-ford-mustang-v6-performance-31279) that the car should weigh less than 3500 lbs.

    Yes, your info on the curb weight of the Mustang is off. It will have about a 300 pound weight advantage over the camaro giving it a clear advantage in performance, IRS or not.

    The 2011 Camaro V6 should weigh at least two hundred pounds more than the 2011 Mustang V6, but c'mon guys, ya gotta let the Camaro win SOMETHIN'!

    I call BS on the styling round. The Camaro turns heads while the Mustang is "just another Mustang". Unless your a fan, most people can't tell the difference from the '09, '10, or '11 (when it becomes available) models. The Camaro is brand new with a style unlike any other. In fact, it just made it as one of the 3 finalists for 2010 World Car Design of the Year.
    There's simply NO WAY the Mustang beats the Camaro in style.

    KM--I agree with you personally, but I have to be as objective as possible, and the lack of a convertible weighs heavily against the Camaro in the style category. Even though I could care less about convertibles of any sort, personally.

    I totally agree with KM, the style issue is soooooo subjective, and the convertible issue essentially being the deciding factor? Come on. How many people besides dudes in their mid-life crisis actually give a crap about the convertible?

    Since style is completely subjective, it shouldn't have any point value at all. For example, the author somehow thinks both cars look equally good, where I think the Mustang looks like a cheap soccer mom car. While we're at it, bonus points for convertible is weak. The article even said the 2011 Camaro will have a convertible option... yeah, the article is about 2010 Camaro vs 2011 Mustang, at the very least don't deduct a point when the next model year will have the same option but it just isn't available yet.

    Overall, I do think the Mustang is the better car. However, there is zero chance the Mustang beats the Camaro in styling. If you're in traffic and you see one of each, there's no comparison.

    It does not matter to me if the new 2011 V6 mustang has one more HP than the Camaro. I am just glad we have the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger back, What one does to make their car better will up the ante for making the other two better next year! it's been that way since Chevy first began competing with the Mustang in 1967. I say let the battle continue!
    PS, I think the Camaro is head an shoulders better in the styling department, but that is my opinion and you are free to differ in yours.

    im sure that the camaro will win car world card design of the year, how can you compare a mustang to that?, its absurde that the mustang wins as far as "Style", and even if it's not available in a convertible its just because its its first year for the camaro 5.
    you can see polls all over the web and the camaro will always win in the style category.

    OMG, Nelson, that review was more bias than a Mexican at a immagration protest. You give the mustang the win on styling points simply based on the fact that it has a convertible? That was dumb. A styling comparison should be done on the styling of one particular car vs the other not if it has other models like a convertible top. What happens if you compare the mustang to the Dodge charger? The mustang would win by default simply because chargers don't come in convertible tops! This article epic fails.

    Are you serious? The new mustangs look like crap. No one will even give them a second look. If you think the Mustangs have more style you are either blind or just plain biased.

    I have been a Gm fan all my life. I owned a camaro and currently a corvette. My next car will be a mustang. The camaro exterior may be bolder but sit in both 2010 vehicles and there is a large gap in quality and style in the mustangs favor. The trunk is larger, and you can actually see out the windows. The camaro suffers from obesity, and gigantism. I will stick with the slightly less hot thin chick over the hot fat chick :)

    That "technical specs" pdf sheet estimated weight of 3750lbs has to be wrong for the V-6 model Mustang.

    This is the same link (only for the GT V8), which lists the curb weight 3,603lbs est. for the V8 6speed manual hard top.
    There is no way the V8 varient with larger brakes, wheels, etc. is going to be over 100lbs less than the V6 base version, especially with the 2010 base listed at ~3400lbs with a 40lb heavier engine.

    The Camaro is clearly the winner in Style points. Like said above, you cant tell the difference between a 09 mustang and a 11 mustang.
    I would say the Mustang beat the Camaro in "Yawn" points.

    Styling. Of course, that's purely subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I agree the Camaro is striking, but the longer you look at it, the less you like it. It's a huge car ...and looks like they took an Impala and styled it in the shape of retro Camaro. The curb weight of the Camaro (esp the SS) bears this out. It also has huge "thunder thighs" and really big back end that's out of proportion to the rear window/roof. The new Camaro styling is a caricature of the original. If you want a cartoonish-looking car, that's fine -- buy the new Camaro. To my eyes, the 2010+ Mustang styling is much more tastefully done.

    Performance. The curb weight you referenced for the 2011 Mustang V6 is almost 200 pounds more than the 2011 Mustang GT that Ford has published. When Ford originally published the 2011 Mustang specs, they retracted the V8 curb weight specs and published the revised specs. They have not published revised specs for the V6. Yeah, it's Ford's fault for not publishing the revised V6 specs. That's the problem with "paper challenges" ...that's all it is, esp when the paper specs are incorrect. Professional race car drivers have been quoted that the new Camaro "handles like a pig" (Automobile Magazine) and that its IRS suspension feels "discombobulated" (Car & Driver) on rough pavement. These same articles praised the new Mustangs handling on the track and on rough roads.

    Comfort. All of the actual comparisons in the media of the new Mustang and Camaro have been unanimous in saying the Mustang's interior design and quality is far, far superior to Camaro's. Your 5-4 scoring is way too charitable for the new Camaro. Camaro is nowhere near that close to Mustang. Also, not only does the new Camaro look as big as a tank, driving a new Camaro feels like driving a tank. Absolutely no visibility.

The new Mustang is much farther ahead of the Camaro than your scoring indicates. Mustang is the original. Camaro is the copy. Mustang introduced the retro-styled Mustang for 2005, Chevy came back 5 years later with their copy. Chevy abandoned the Camaro in 2003, Ford has been making the Mustang since 1964 1/2. With the hot new 2011 Mustangs and GM's bankruptcy, once has to wonder how soon Chevy will throw in the towel, again, and shut down the Camaro line.

    When the Mustang was restyled a few years ago it rec'd high marks for styling which I think the Camaro now has over it. However, having owned both in the past I would buy the Mustang over the Camaro because Ford has built a much more reliable vehicle. To live with it over the years would be much less frustrating than having to return to the dealer for repairs like you will have to with the Camaro. The Camaros I had were very bad in this area as is my current Chevy. Mustang wins!

    Are you joking? Did you even put the Camaro and Mustang side by side? The Camaro is possibly the most unique, head-turning car on the road today, the Mustang has far less dramatic styling ques. I'll give you credit the Mustang has a more "premium" interior, and i kind of preffer it, but the Camaros exterior is above and beyond win, arguably the best styled car of 2010, let along among Camaro vs. Mustang.

    Never have I ever seen so many heads turn as I have with the 2010 Camaro. People come out of the woodwork to comment about how they love the looks, even when I'm sitting at stop lights. Mustangs are great looking, Camaros are Excellent looking!

    The Ford guys will never admit the Mustang just doesn't turn heads like the Camaro. The Mustang rear is butt ugly. No comparision the Camaro is a hit. Mustang has a new motor, its about time, they have been under powered for years. The direct injection v-6 and the LS series V-8 are the best on the market and they are in a much much better looking package.

    Here's the deal: yes it's a paper comparo but in the real world a 6-cly Mustang is a dog by definition. Let's keep something sacred in the US: V-8, rear wheel drive, manual transmission, big fat tyres. Amen. Who cares about the Camaro? They were brought out in the 60's as as sad commercial challenger but to their credit did eventually evolve into a decent pony car. Today's Camaro may have the specs but the styling is waaay too Jetson for an adult muscle car driver who was there when the cars ROCKED and we mere high schoolers had slicks on our GTOs in North Hollywood and Van Nuys Blvd. When the world was real, remember?

    ok compare the 2011 Camaro to the 2011 Mustang both have convertibles, but since the the mustang is a stale 6 year old design (very little change since 2005) the Camaro has the edge... score should be 10-9 benefit to the Camaro for it's freshness.
    and no way does Sync edge the Camaro out on features, Onstar is a far more valuable feature. and it's navigation feature is easier to use than the Sync's advange should again go to the Camaro 5-4.
    it sounds like you've studied the Mustang and heard rumors about the Camaro... a very poorly researched article.
    i do want to say kudos to ford for tossing the cologne v6. welcome to the 21st century ford.

    oh and JB, Camaro has outsold the Mustang for the last 10 months straight and shows NO signs of slowing, Camaro LS base prices is $22,680 Mustang's base price is $22,145 where is this $2,000 difference? besides, $22,145 is no bargain for 6 year old styling.

    Mustang is a way better car than the Crapmaro, the rear of the Camaro looks like a fat women with big hips and the dash must have been an afterthought. Mustang is a clear winner.

    The Camaro eats mustangs alive in looks and performance.
    BTW, BLACK GT, your rustang does turn heads, unfortunately AWAY from your common as muck car. Rustangs all look the same no matter what year it is. its old, everyones got one even your grandma, get over it! There is a new king on the road, and he's hungry for ponies!

    Camaro styling wins at looking like a kids toy. Kinda looks like japanese designed the exterior and then GM just enlarged it. Plus the cheap interior, camaro's day is comining when everyone has one and it's looks get "old". What I think ford has done with the 2008 or 2009 mustangs and up is pretty strategic. A muscle car on a diet, and the 2011 models with better MPG's, HP, and two brand new engine choices than those crappy old ones.

    Really if it was up to me, I would take a 6.1 SRT-8 hemi instead of the gay-jap-maro or what I would normally call a girlstang, but right now the way things are looking for the "big 3", Ford is the only way to buy right now. The more I look at the mustang, the more it keeps looking that much better. The rustmaro when it came out was more like a gimmic car when it came out and keeps getting uglier and uglier.

    The first comments about Retro Modern and thus saying the Mustang didn't overdo it? Please, the stale styling of the stang is that -stale. It was totally retro to begin with when it first came out, just like the Challenger. And stating your editorial policy, of giving honest unbiased opinions etc'. Puhleeze! By the way the Camaro buyers over the past 8 months didn't agree with you. Nor do the sales no.s if you bothered to read the facts! And to mention you don't have all the specs, because Ford hasn't released them doesn't broker your opinion any more than other fanatics who speculate based on 'their expertise'.

    The Camaro turns heads now like the Mustang did in '05. Let's see it turn heads in five years. It will grow "stale" as well. Although, the better question is whether or not GM will even have the money to put into a re-design/refresh in a few years. Camaro sales are pretty good right now, but even with all the hype, they aren't great, and not beating the Mustang by much. Sales will drop off in a year or two when those who have been waiting to buy have bought and its future will not be as certain...again.

    Why no mention of interior quality in your review? Last time I checked, the interior is where the driver's seat is located. Or were we only trying to keep the score as close as possible? Perhaps GM will learn to make better use of my tax dollars in the next refresh of their claustrophobic, bloated toad.

    I think the Mustang beats the Camaro in styling. If the Camaro came out first (which never happens) everybody would be talking about how cool the new Mustang looks. I like the Camaro from the side view but think the front and back view do not look good. The car is way too big for how small the interior is. If the Mustang is so stale than why did the Camaro copy it? I have a 2007 mustang and think it most certainly looks better than the Camaro.

    ?? how could we fairly compare a 2010 model against a 2011 model. in terms of looks, head turning camaro is my pick. i am not keen on its interior tho'. a little bit too tight, and i am a small guy. i will stick with my infinity g35.

    one thing the camaro fans have forgotten, the mustang has been around to look like an older model, camaro hasn't and of course the camaro "styling" has been paid for by every tax payer and your going to have to pay even more to buy the car along side the 50 billion that we all gave to gm, heck general motors should give all of us a car to pay us back. i do have to agree though, the camaro does look good but only until you have to bring it back to the dealer for front fascia repairs after it cracks at mid-speed.

    Camaro fans say the Mustang is a soccer mom car. Well the Camaro looks like a child predator’s favorite pick. Watch for them cruising around you local grade schools. Damn Camaro driven perverts.
    Just because the Mustang has been around for a while doesn’t make the new Camaro look fresh or better! So Catherine Zeta-Jones is no longer good looking because she’s not a new model????

    to Romito: the pony car has always been a light, quick, fun and stylish car with american muscle under the hood and a comfortable ride, a balance between all things that make a car great. the bloated camaro could not be further from that...the engine is oversized and underpowered, the ancient OHV technology has run its course and the design concept was not made with comfort in mind, it was made to appeal to the childish, manga-influenced youth of transformers-age america. the camaro has, and always will be just a novelty, a copy of the true american pony car. instead of attempting to reinvent the wheel (and failing) like the redesigned camaro has, the mustang has listened to its faithful fans and improved on a design they pioneered in 1964. the fords live axle will outperform the chevys trendy independent rear, the fords smaller displacement engine will outperform the chevys monstrous 6.2, and the ford fans will see their pair of ponies ride on for years to come, while the bowtie boys will watch their flashy, impractical and cartoonish camaro fizzle out and fade into the shadow of americas true pony car, just as it has always done.
    if there's one thing i commend the camaro for, it's giving ford and ford fans the push they need to make our mustangs better, faster and more fun, time and time again.

    If you really want to figure out who has the best looking car simply see the makers of the movie Transformers. The producers said they looked long and hard for the coolest looking car and Camaro won hands down. NUFF SAID!!!!

    I drive both these cars on a daily basis and in my opinion the Mustangs interior is far superior to the Camaros cave like claustorphobic cabin. While I agree that making the deciding factor on looks based on whether its a convertible or not is silly, the Mustang just looks mean and sleek. The Camaro looks like all the fatasses standing in the buffet line. To Whoever says Camaros are "head turners", take a look at whos turning their heads...Mullet sporting aholes in wife beaters. And once again, just like in 67, the Camaro has to come out and try to imitate a Mustang. And once again, like in 02, the Camaro will fade away and be forgotten, while the Mustang will keep going strong.

    Here is an unbiased opinion from someone who has owned the best that both the Mustang and Camaro has had to offer over the years. My first car was a 1969 Mach 1 - flat out hauled a** and still one of the best looking cars "ever". My next car was a 1967 Camaro RS/SS. Great looking and I built a motor that still couldn't rival the Mach 1 and who puts a 2 speed tranny in a car (Powerglides suck). In the years since then bought many a piece of crap cars because of wife/kids and then finally bought a 2001 Mustang V6. Nicely built but no power and sold it immediately. When the 2010 Camaro came out, I thought awesome looking car. Drove both the V6 and V8 and both have great power, but it does drive like a tank, and I should know, because I used to drive tanks in the Marines! Told my wife I want another 1969 Mach 1. Although Ford is getting close with the latest styling, nothing beats the original. Ford or Chevy, its like religion. If you grew up Catholic, then thats what you are unless you do a girl thats another religion, then thats what you and your kids are going to be. End of story.

    Both cars are winners since they are made in the USA. However, I give the visibility edge to Mustang and visibility when driving is essential. The 2011 Mustang also offers the glass roof which opens up the car enormously compared to the cave-like ambience of the Camaro. I have to agree, the original Camaro body is superior to its newer, over-sized big sister. On the showroom floor some may notice that Camaro, however the new 2011 Mustang offers so much more...making me a new Mustang fan!
    God Bless the USA...one thing we can all agree on is we have choices in the USA.

    That Camaro is just awful: it's too heavy, visibility sucks, and the interior is cheap and boy-racer 80s-tacky.
    I mean, I hate Chevys anyway, but they always find a way to make it easy (except for the new Malibu).

    I'm not a big fan of either but I do agree that nothing beats the styling of the new camaro 2010/11. It's a well known fact and I'm sure that the author's vision must have been blurred from all that pot when he wrote the comments on styling. Basing styling on convertible option as a metric was a poor choice.

    Well, well, well....we see in the aftermath of all of this mustang vs. camaro banter that the mustang always seems to win in the most subjective pointless areas, just so that the masses of ignorantly blind mustang followers will subscribe to the writers blogs, or magazines or whatever media they decide to use to BS the mindless public. the facts remain that you are playing catch up to the camaro now stangies! your comparing a 2010 to a 2011...unfair. lets see a 2011 on 2011 battle and watch the fords fall flat on their boringly styled faces. stang 305 hp...camaro 312 HP, which is what it was the whole time but was conservativly rated. now we have the apparently all important convertible that all the chicks will love...to drive. so in a 2011 on 2011 stangs are still playing catch up. and get a new tail...that one is hideous!

    The Camaros exterior looks really good but the interior is plain boredom the radio is hideous and it be hard installing a gps/dvd in there unlike the mustang its so simple to replace the radio and the interior is beautiful. I wish they had kept the 2005 tail because the tail from 2009-2010 sucks.

    Let's not forget to mention that GM had declared bankrupcy TWICE, when Ford never did. Mustang has a better interior, fuel economy and Ford is a better company overall. I've driven a manual 2007 Mustang (base V6), been inside a 2008 Camaro and like one of the comments above me had said that the visibility in Camaro isn't as good. Go Ford!

    Okay, all I hear is looks, looks, looks, and weight. The way I see it they both share very similar shapes but the mustang has basically never really changed. The camaro has evolved very nicely. But when it comes to cars you can't just look at the shiny paint, you have to look at whats under the hood. I'm not talking about v6, 300+ horsepower, and gas mileage (not denying that its important now) you have to look at how it actually runs. The mustang engine sounds awesomely powerful, but seriously how often are you going to use all of that power? And when comparing cars compare from the same year, don't skip around.
