Lexus GS-F And New SC Convertible In The Works

If Lexus is serious about building its F performance division into a genuine rival to BMW M or Mercedes-Benz AMG it will need to launch more models than just the IS-F and LFA supercar. There’s no doubting the talents of Lexus’ engineers--one spin in the LFA and we’re sure you will be left with anything but respect for the Japanese automaker’s technology and know-how when it comes to making cars go fast.

The only problem the F marque has is a lack of a suitable model base to start building up its arsenal. All is not lost, however, as there are some bright spots. A high-performance version of the rear-wheel drive GS has always been a no-brainer, especially with models like the M5 and E63 winning scores of fans all over the world. A hotted-up SC convertible could have been something special as well but sadly that model is set to meet its demise this July.

All is not lost however as there are reports claiming that a new GS-F and next-generation SC convertible are both in development.

The GS-F would essentially pick up a detuned version of the 4.8-liter V-10 from the LFA, developing around 450 horsepower, and go on sale in 2013. Special features would include a torque vectoring differential on the rear axle and plenty of carbon-fiber to reduce weight.

As for the next-generation SC, Lexus is expected to position the convertible further upmarket and compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz SL. To do so it would grow in size in comparison to the current model and pick up a powerful rear-wheel drive hybrid system complete with the IS-F’s 5.0-liter V-8 engine. It’s expected release date is mid-2014.

Pictured above is the regular GS sedan fitted with a range of F-Sport performance accessories, which are already available for sale and installation at most Lexus dealers.

Does this going fast involve electrical glitches and sticky brake pedals? Because "anything but respect" sounds like a big, double-decker fear sandwich topped with a dollop of greed.

  3. Hmm,Lexus thinks it can slap on a V10 and able challenge the top dogs. First, it needs take on the Infiniti M or G series before go for the big dogs.

  4. Not gonna make any recall jokes, but the IS F is not as good as a BMW M3 and I doubt GS-F will be as good as its Mercedes and BMW competition.

  6. You guys have no idea what you're talking about. For one... Infiniti quality sucks, I had a G35 and it isn't as fast as my IS. So I wouldn't worry about the G and M series. If you are comparing the G37 to the IS350 that isn't fair since the IS350 came out around 4 years before the G37 so of course Infiniti would up the horsepower to draw more people to that car over the IS. And Toyota has been making F1 cars for a while, so to make a street car go fast and stable isn't rocket science to them. You think the engineers at Toyota are new to designing cars? Heck.. they were probably engineers that left BMW or Mercedes to work at Lexus. So your "perfect" M3 or M5 could be helping to design the GS-F.
