2013 Mercedes-Benz S Class spy shots

Mercedes-Benz is nearing completion of its next-generation S Class flagship sedan, with the latest prototypes testing in Europe now wearing the least camouflage gear yet.

We can clearly see new LED daytime running lights and indicators, which on the new model appear to be at the top of the headlight.

The grille is also revealed for the first time, appearing much larger than on previous generations.

Due for a reveal later this year as a 2013 model, the new S Class is expected to be slightly longer than the current model and come packed with a range of fuel efficient engines as well as a new plug-in hybrid option, though this latter option is unlikely to be available at launch.

While it's still too early to confirm any details, R&D boss Dr. Thomas Weber has previously stated that new direct injected and turbocharged engines will make up the powertrain lineup for the next S Class, which means you can expect a similar lineup to the one in the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class.

The new S550 should come with a 429-horsepower twin-turbo V-8, while the S600 should pick up a new iteration of the automaker’s twin-turbo V-12 with around 510 horsepower on tap. The eventual S63 AMG model will get a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 with around 550 horsepower.

Weber has also previously revealed that the plug-in hybrid powertrain from the 2009 Vision S500 Plug-In Hybrid Concept will also appear in the next-generation S Class and promise sub-6.0 second runs to 60 mph and fuel economy of 70 mpg or better.

In terms of styling, expect influences from the fluid F800 Style concept car to feature on the new S Class. Some advanced technology like the recently launched PRE-SCAN active suspension set-up, a new autonomous-driving traffic assistant, and the futuristic SERVO-HMI (Human Machine Interface) virtual operating assistant may make it too.

Look out for the world debut of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz S Class this September at the 2012 Paris Auto Show.

  1. WTF? I thought the Next-Gen S-class will look like the F700 Concept! This looks like the current face-lifted one! Why Mercedes? I hope this is just the VERY VERY heavily disguised S-class! PLEASE PLEASE Redesign it, Because Mercedes-benz MUST RISE AGAIN!

  2. @Seylan, relax. This is a "TEST MULE", essentially the new car running gear hidden beneath the sheet metal of the current car. Did you even read the story?

  3. Hello,

Sounds like you know what's going on.

    I'm interested in buying a new 2012 550 AMG.
Is there anything I should know that you think is important that is not readily known?

I came to this page because I think that the value of 'my car' will drop if the 2013 is way different.

As it is today, I love the look and all that it puts out.
I'll take it for a spin the day of the closing.

I do not NEED to drive it in order to know that I want it.

    Thanks.

  7. I cannot wait to see it all done. I really liked the previous design and would agree with northstar engine, so it will be interesting to see what they come up with.
I do however hope they fix the placement of the LED daytime lights. The ones on the S class now, look out of place.

  8. The present S-Class is certainly the best looking car on the road today, besides the RR Phantom! I hope they design the new model to be much bigger and more aggressive. The way Mercedes designers are going, its safe for Mercedes fans.

  11. I think Mercedes Benz S-Class will best fleet for livery cab or limousine. I think Hello S-Class and goodbye Lincoln Town Car. it is more nice design generations. I think German car is better than American car.

  12. In my opinion: There is NO CONTEST between the S Class and a Town Car!!

I agree with you about the Limo status.

Ultimately, sorry to say.... there will be more poor people and more rich people.... and you will see the rich opting to be in the back seat of an S550.

  13. Please Mbenz , please dont make it look like the f700,
it looks like a funny frog please dont do it .
Go for the ocean drive look instead, i suggest.
Also we want a more complex interior.the previous generation had a better interior than the 2006 gen.

  14. I wonder how well it hustles around the track? All the body weight has to tax those tires.

  15. i think it will be ok...thye seem to have pushed the wheels out to the corners which means you wil lhave a balanced distribution of weight for the car.
