2011 BMW 5-Series sedan

Inside the cabin, Dakota leather upholstery is standard on the 550i, and comes in six different color schemes, including three new tones. Nappa leather is available as an upgrade. Dark Burl Ash wood trim is the standard, while Ash Anthracite and Fineline Matte are optional extras.

As with any modern luxury sedan, there's not shortage of safety tech at play here either, though BMW will certainly be looking to improve its Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rating of "Marginal" for side-impact ratings due to the lack of standard side air bags on 2008-2010 models. To that end, front, side and side-curtain airbags are all standard for 2011.

Optional safety technology features include: Active Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go, which allows the cruise control to bring the car to a full stop if traffic warrants it, then acceleration back up to speed automatically if stopped for less than 3 seconds; Top View cameras to see all around the car, and Frontal Collision Warning with early brake application when equipped with the Active Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go package. Blind-spot detection, adaptive headlights, lane departure warning and BMW Night Vision with pedestrian detection are also available.

BMW hasn't released official details for sale and pricing yet, but we expect the all-new 2011 BMW 5-Series Sedan to be on sale from early 2010 at an estimated starting price of about $52,000 for the 535i, $60,000 for the 550i and later in 2010, about $46,000 for the 528i. Expect xDrive, also coming later in 2010, to add about $2,500 to the price of any model.

  2. It's good to see the 5 Series return to classic BMW styling - No more BMW's that look like Australian Drag Queens!
(Not that I have anything against Australian Drag Queens - I just don't want one in my parking space)

  3. Wow, in spite of the obvious, I now know why Ford thinks that the SHO should cost 40k. It slots in nicely between the 550 and the 535i at substantial discount while offering similar performance and quality. BMW is my favorite import, but the cost have risen too much to justify. My last BMW the 745i had a terrible resale value so I'm sure the FORD will not do any worst. Here I come Blue Oval! And watch your back Bavarians, the SHO is no joke!!

  4. Let's wait for the real one in real, because the E class looks good, but I think this will look a lot better than most of cars.

  5. This car looks very crisp and impressive. The rear looks similar to the 3-series coupe's and the rest is a great combo of modern and classic BMW design themes. I do wish the Bangle headlights remained on this car, would have looked perfect. But these will do..
