Due to the rising demand for fuel efficient cars, it’s no surprise that General Motors is planning to introduce the small Opel Corsa two-door hatch to the US. In an interview with
AutoNews, GM's global product chief Bob Lutz said the new Corsa will "very definitely go to the United States", where it will be sold wearing
Saturn badges.
Sales of small cars have traditionally been low because of fears of poor safety levels and the attitude that size matters when it comes to collisions. Though there is some truth to this statement, the latest generation of small cars have safety performance equal to, and in some cases better than large cars. The current Corsa achieved five stars, which is the highest available rating by the independent Euro NCAP crash testing organization.
We'll have to wait for the next generation Corsa to be released within the next five years to enjoy this small car goodness. If Lutz thinks this is enough for GM to get ahead of the small car market he's got another thing coming. As usual with GM, it'll be a case of too little, too late.
