
Details on Honda's S2000 Type R and next-gen model
A few years back, an official proposal was leaked from
Honda, which detailed an even harder version of its popular roadster labeled the
S2000 Type R. The concept was dropped at the last minute in favor of the 2.2L AP2 model that was sold in US markets. An article from Japan’s

Temple of VTEC is now reporting that Honda will release its potent S2000 Type R to signal the end of the current car’s production and to generate hype for an all new model due towards the end of 2008. The Type R should arrive some time before then.
According to the original 2004 proposal, Honda engineers will be reducing the vehicle’s weight by up to 100kg, which brings the already light roadster down to 1150kg from 1250kg. The power to weight ratio will fall to just 4.75kg/hp from the current car’s 5.16kg/hp. To reach the weight target, the developers will be replacing some of the engine internals with light forged items, making the air conditioning, stereo and SRS air bags factory options instead of standard fare and removing the spare tire, retractable roof and sound deadening as well. The suspension, brakes and tire packages will also be upgraded.
For the all new S2000, rumors are rife that the roadster will grow to become a four-door, front-engine, front-drive cruiser. The magazine reports the next ‘S’ will remain a front-engine rear-drive roadster, but will lose its hard edge. Instead of targeting the sportier European marques, Honda will aim the new S2000 at Mazda’s MX-5/Miata. The current high-revving four-banger will be replaced with a milder but more advanced VTEC K20A engine developing around 200hp, mated to a six-speed clutchless manual. Engineers will add an electronically controlled folding metal hardtop, but weight will remain the same 1250kg. We for one hope this isn’t the case with the new S2000, it’s hard to imagine Honda would build the current car’s successor like this.
