We tend to think that company spokespeople get a better deal in showrooms than the rest of us. For example, GM gave Tiger Woods a free ride -- many of them, in fact -- when... May 9, 2011 by Richard Read 1
Fresh from its "preview" in "concept" form at the Detroit Auto Show, the 2012 Honda Civic is here, and it looks pretty good. It also offers the all-important 40 mpg in two... February 17, 2011 by Nelson Ireson 6
Pundits say that the economy is on the mend and that customers want to spend. (Sadly, they don't often say it in rhyme.) But while the recession may be behind us, there's... January 11, 2011 by Richard Read
Endurance racing really does require endurance, both from the cars and their drivers. Night has fallen on Texas Motor Speedway, and we're only a little over one-third of the... June 19, 2010 by Nelson Ireson
An hour before the checkered flag, we had the lead by four laps. Our final driver was in the car, fueled and back on course, running what would prove to be some of the... May 17, 2010 by Nelson Ireson 4
The Civic and Corolla used to be the segment leaders among inexpensive compact sedans, but just over the past two to three model years everything's changed with the entrance of several excellent models.
The Kia Forte is one of the oldest in this segment now, yet it's still a good choice with a strong feature list and perky driving feel.
Then there's the Chevrolet Cruze, which feels more refined and sophisticated than its low price tag might suggest.
The Hyundai Elantra is also one of the best-equipped vehicles in this class, and all versions get an EPA 40 mpg highway.
Meanwhile the Ford Focus might be the best-driving vehicle in this class, with excellent handling and a firm but comfortable ride—plus a bold, nicely styled interior.
Also in the mix is the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta, though the Jetta suffers from the same somewhat de-styled, de-contented syndrome as the Civic.
