Why should I also consider these?

A mechanical twin of the Chevrolet Equinox, the GMC Terrain is mostly distinguished from the Chevy with its bolder (boulder?) styling and this year, its new touchscreen audio system.

The Ford Edge is a bit bigger overall and offers the complex MyFord Touch system, as well as a Sport version and this year, a new EcoBoost turbo version with up to 30 mpg.

A new CR-V is coming this year, with revised styling, but no larger engine options.

Toyota's Venza was new in 2010, and it's an interesting choice in the class, related mechanically to the Highlander but optimized for five passengers, and with four- and six-cylinder engine options.

Lastly, the VW Tiguan seats five and has the usual German feel and look to recommend it, but fuel economy is low, and sticker prices are relatively high.

2012 Chevrolet Equinox
A versatile layout, impressive performance, good ride comfort, and reasonable pricing all add up to make the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox a strong value—and a good pick for small families.

The 2012 Ford Edge rises to the top of the five-seat crossover niche with forward-thinking technology and a gas-saving EcoBoost option.

2012 Honda CR-V
The 2012 Honda CR-V is a great family vehicle, with a thoughtfully designed and comfortable interior, and improved refinement, but it lacks the confident, sprightly feel present in past CR-Vs.

2012 Volkswagen Tiguan
It's not particularly fun to drive, but the 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan feels every bit like a premium crossover vehicle.

2011 Toyota RAV4
Don't let appearances mislead; the 2011 Toyota RAV4 is a modern, practical crossover choice and great for frugal families.
