Perpetrators now have another vehicle to look out for. The Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] F-150, America's best-selling vehicle, will soon be available in a police-oriented configuration.
The F-150 Special Service Vehicle fulfills a unique duty for police departments in need of something both capable of hauling cargo and the accused.
The truck is being positioned as both a law enforcement vehicle and a government fleet truck.
This "cop truck" is based on the entry-level F-150 XL model with either the SuperCab or larger SuperCrew cab depending on a department's needs. Ford will also offer a choice of 4x2 or 4x4, and either the 5.0-liter "Coyote" V-8 engine or the company's torquey 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V-6.

Powertrain modifications are limited to a 240-amp alternator for extended idle periods.
Like the consumer XL, the F-150 Special Service Vehicle comes standard with vinyl flooring with cloth front seats. However, the rear bench is vinyl (for easy cleanup), and the truck lacks a center console, allowing police to install their computer and radio equipment in its place. Instead of a 40/20/40 front bench seat, it uses a 40/blank/40 setup.
Truth be told, the F-150 Special Service Vehicle isn't a dedicated police vehicle like the company's Explorer and Taurus-based Interceptor models.
The package is about as comprehensive as those offered on Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500 built-for-duty trucks.
Still, with its ability to be ordered and outfitted as a police vehicle, it may be worth paying more attention to the next F-150 you see in your rearview mirror.
