Mercedes AMG’s Lewis Hamilton led from pole to claim victory on Sunday at the 2016 Formula One United States Grand Prix, held at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

It was his 50th career win but more importantly it helped reduce the points gap with teammate Nico Rosberg in the 2016 title race.

Hamilton had a good start and remained in control from there. In contrast, Rosberg, starting on the dirty side of the track, struggled to find grip and was passed by Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo. Rosberg eventually reclaimed the lost position to finish second, 4.5 seconds behind Hamilton. Ricciardo finished third, almost 20 seconds behind the winner.

Fourth place went to Sebastian Vettel whose Ferrari [NYSE:RACE] received a little bump at the start of the race but was not damaged. That bump was courtesy of a tussle between Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg and Williams’ Valtteri Bottas. Hulkenberg was forced to retire while Bottas suffered a puncture.

It was also a tough day for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. After coming in too early for a pit change, surprising his pit crew and losing a position, Verstappen fought his way back up to fifth only to suffer powertrain trouble and retire. Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen was also forced to retire due to car trouble, in his case a loose wheel.

With Verstappen out of contention, there was a good battle between McLaren’s Fernando Alonso, Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz and Williams’ Felipe Massa for fifth. Sainz looked like he had the spot but Alonso managed to pass him on the penultimate lap. Sainz would have to settle for sixth while Massa took seventh.

Eighth place went to Force India’s Sergio Perez, ninth went to McLaren’s Jenson Button, and Romain Grosjean, driving for the home team Haas, rounded out the top 10.

In the 2016 Drivers’ Championship, Rosberg remains in the lead with 331 points. Hamilton is second with 305 points while Ricciardo is third with 227 points. In the Constructors’ Championship, winning team Mercedes moves up to 636 points. Red Bull is second with  400 points and Ferrari third with 347 points. The next race on the calendar is the Mexican Grand Prix on October 30.
