There were two prevalent themes at the 2016 Paris auto show: vehicle electrification and SUVs. In some cases, we saw these themes combined. Case in point is the Mercedes-Benz Generation EQ concept, an electric SUV that previews the first of the automaker’s planned Tesla [NSDQ:TSLA] rivals.

Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta

Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta

There was still plenty of cars to thrill those with gasoline in their veins. A crowd favorite was the new Ferrari [NYSE:RACE] LaFerrari Aperta. It’s the convertible version of the LaFerrari coupe which debuted three years ago. It’s much more exclusive, though. Ferrari will build just 209 units and they’re all sold out.

Another highlight was Audi’s RS 3. The compact sport sedan is sailing into showrooms next summer, complete with a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-5 delivering 400 horsepower. It’s only real competitor is Mercedes-AMG’s CLA45, which has 375 hp on tap.

Audi also used the Paris auto show to present a new Q5. It has big shoes to fill as the outgoing model sold more than 1.6 million units since its debut late last decade. The new Q5 should prove a hit as the vehicle promises to be safer, more fuel-efficient and more dynamic than its predecessor.

Honda Civic Type R Prototype, 2016 Paris auto show

One of the most anticipated cars of 2017 is the new Honda Civic Type R. And yes, this one’s coming to America. Honda in Paris showed us a “prototype” version that is pretty much identical to the car we’ll see in showrooms next year. Notice the triple-pipe exhaust?

New Land Rover Discovery Sport debut on Lego Tower Bridge

New Land Rover Discovery Sport debut on Lego Tower Bridge

Another exciting model coming to showrooms next year is Land Rover’s new Discovery, the replacement for the aging LR4. Featuring three rows, more off-road capability than you’ll ever need at Starbucks, and a gorgeous design, the new Discovery is a vehicle we can't wait to test. Here it is on top of the largest Lego structure ever made.

Mercedes probably made more announcements in Paris than other automaker. In addition to the Generation EQ concept above, the automaker also showed off its new GT Roadster, E-Class All-Terrain and electric Smart family. Oh, and it also confirmed a world-beating hypercar.

Hyundai RN30 concept, 2016 Paris auto show

One of the wildest concepts on display was Hyundai’s RN30, and it’s actually production-pound. The concept is based on the new i30 hatchback, the likely replacement for our Elantra GT, and previews the first offering from Hyundai’s new N performance division.

Renault Trezor concept, 2016 Paris auto show

But what about the French flair? It was a bit subdued this year but one of the standouts was the Trezor concept from Renault. It’s a big electric GT that sadly isn’t production-bound. Renault says it built the concept to preview its new design language, just as it did with the DeZir concept in 2010, which previewed the design of the automaker’s current crop of cars.

2017 Ram Rebel TRX

2017 Ram Rebel TRX

It may not have been in Paris, but Ram’s Rebel TRX concept is certainly worth a mention. Why? Because Hellcat. That’s right. The Rebel TRX is powered by everyone’s favorite supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. The output needed to be dialed down a little but there’s still plenty of grunt. Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] may have turned off some buyers with its new V-6-powered F-150 Raptor. Let’s hope Ram takes advantage of the situation and builds this truck.

There was much, much more in Paris. As always, you’ll find our complete coverage on the show over at our dedicated hub.
