BMW is overhauling the powertrain lineup in its 2-Series range for the 2017 model year.

The coupes and convertibles adopt the latest versions of the automaker’s 4- and 6-cylinder engines and in the process benefit from performance and efficiency gains. The cars also adopt new badges to denote the extra proficiency they’re now packing.

At the bottom of the range, a new 230i replaces the previous 228i. The 230i still sports a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder but now peak power is 248 horsepower, up from 240 hp previously. Peak torque of 258 pound-feet remains unchanged.

Further up, a new M240i replaces the previous M235i. This M Performance model sticks with a turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder but sees its output rise to 335 hp and 369 lb-ft, up from 320 hp and 330 lb-ft previously.

Performance on par with M2

Transmissions include 6-speed manual (now with rev-matching) and 8-speed automatics, and all-wheel drive continues to be available on the M Performance models. With all-wheel drive and the 8-speed automatic equipped, the M240i Coupe will now accelerate to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, or 0.2 of a second quicker than before.

Interestingly, this acceleration makes the all-wheel-drive M240i Coupe just as quick as the rear-wheel-drive M2 introduced for 2016. The M2 doesn’t see any changes for 2017. Its own turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder produces 365 hp and 369 lb-ft.

Fuel economy and pricing information will be released closer to the market launch of the 2017 2-Series range this summer.

Note, most of the changes also affect the related 1-Series Hatchback sold overseas.
