Volkswagen just set the front-wheel-drive production car lap record at the Nürburgring using its new GTI Clubsport S.

Now, finally, we have the mandatory video footage so that we can get a small taste of what it must have been like setting the record.

Behind the wheel was German racing driver Benny Leuchter. His best time was 7:49.21, which is well clear of the 7:50.63 set by  the Honda Civic Type R a year ago.

The car he was piloting features an uprated version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder found in the regular GTI, plus better brakes, stickier tires and a special setting in the car’s driving modes selector tuned specifically for the ‘Ring.

VW plans to build just 400 examples of the GTI Clubsport S and sadly none are coming to the United States.
