Yesterday saw the covers come off one of the most anticipated cars of the year: the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R. It’s the hardcore, track-focused version of AMG’s sexy sports car, and it comes with a supercar rivaling 577 horsepower on tap. We’ve even heard the car is faster around a track than the more powerful SLS AMG Black Series.

Another car we saw yesterday was the 2017 Porsche Panamera. It was revealed a little early thanks to the leak and the photos show the car is one shapely sedan. We also got a peek inside where traditional Porsche cues are blended with high-tech elements. The full reveal comes next week.

Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] quietly rolled out the production version of its new GT supercar during last weekend’s 24 Hours of Le Mans race. It took part in a procession that included the original trio of GT40s that made the historic one-two-three finish at the French race 50 years ago.

Another hypercar making headlines this week was Bugatti’s upcoming Chiron. The CEO of the French marque took the 1,480-horsepower car for a spin at Le Mans and actually reached speeds significantly higher than the top-end race cars competing during the 24-hour race. Incredible.

It was a hard week for car fans. After witnessing Toyota’s devastating loss in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, we learned that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles [NYSE:FCAU] will cull the Viper after the 2017 model year. While no reason was given for the Viper's demise, it’s likely due to a combination of low sales and stricter emissions regulations. Before it disappears for good, we'll be treated with a few special editions.

We also learned that Saab as an automotive brand is officially dead. National Electric Vehicle Sweden, which bought the remains of Saab after the Swedish automaker went bankrupt in 2011, won’t revive the Saab brand but will instead use the new name NEVS.
