Volkswagen is just itching to launch a new generation of its Microbus. First there was the Microbus concept of 2001, and then there was the funky Bulli concept of 2011. Now there’s said to be a new ‘Bus’ concept coming and this one may just preview a planned production model.

We’ve previously reported on VW’s plans to present a new Microbus concept at next month’s 2016 Consumer Electronics Show, and now we have a teaser that looks very much like it could be for a modern version.

Autocar is reporting that the unveiling of the concept will be followed shortly by a production announcement. The production model is said to be earmarked for VW’s plant in Puebla, Mexico, with the first examples due as early as 2017.

But that’s not all. The concept will also showcase new technologies such as autonomous and connectivity systems as well as a next-gen electric drivetrain. The move is part of VW's efforts to rebuild its reputation following its diesel emissions cheating scandal, which includes greater emphasis on vehicle electrification and advanced technology.

The new electric drivetrain to be previewed in the Microbus concept is likely the modular MEB electric car platform VW previous confirmed. A small electric motor is expected to be mounted at the front axle with the batteries to be placed in the vehicle floor. The MEB will be capable of offering driving ranges between 155 and 310 miles.

The 2016 CES runs from January 6-9 in Las Vegas. Hopefully we’ll have more details on VW’s plans for the show before then. For more CES coverage, head to our dedicated hub.
