It was only a few days ago that it was reported that the new track-focused version of Mercedes-AMG’s GT sports car would be called a GT R, and now a video has emerged showing a prototype testing on Germany’s Nürburgring race track. The video, from YouTube user cvdzijden - Supercar Videos, shows what the car will be like on the move and gives us a good taste of the burly exhaust note.
That exhaust note is coming from an uprated version of the GT’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8. In the GT S the engine delivers 503 horsepower but we’re expecting something closer to 550 hp in this latest application. Other mods are expected to include improved aero, less weight and stiffened suspension—all developed using lessons learned from the Mercedes-AMG GT3 race car program.
The so-called GT R will go up against rival track-focused models like the Aston Martin Vantage GT12, Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and Porsche 911 GT3. Look for a debut early next year. Note, an even more potent Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is also planned, though this model will come much later in the GT’s life cycle.
