Though we’ve already had a taste of the performance of the all-new, sixth-generation Camaro during our brief drive of a prototype, we now know exactly what it can muster as Chevrolet has confirmed key performance specs for the car.

The new Camaro, which lands in showrooms this fall as a 2016 model and starts at $26,695 with shipping, benefits from less weight and more power across the board. Weight savings are as much as 390 pounds, and the most powerful model at launch packs as much as 455 horsepower.

There are there engine options to choose from this time around, with the entry-level unit being the new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the mid-level option being the 3.6-liter V-6 and the range-topper, for now, being the 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 lifted out of the Corvette. As previously announced, the 2.0-liter turbo four is good for 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, the 3.6-liter V-6 offers 335 hp and 284 lb-ft, and the 6.2-liter V-8 matches the Corvette’s 455 hp and 455 lb-ft.

All three engine options can be had with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic, and the performance specs for either option are listed below.

But these numbers only tell half of the story, because the lighter curb weight also makes the new Camaro feel more responsive and agile behind the wheel. As chief engineer Al Oppenheiser explains, “it brakes more powerfully, dives into corners quicker, accelerates faster and is more fun to drive than ever.”

This is due to the engineering team’s focus on cutting weight and improving structural stiffness. And thanks to advanced computer modeling, the team were able to come up with a modular component strategy that tailored the car’s Alpha rear-wheel-drive platform to each model (see chart below).

Consequently, the base curb weight for the 2016 Camaro is 368 pounds lighter than the previous model, although now the base model is equipped with a four-cylinder whereas previously it had a V-6. The four-cylinder 2016 Camaro weighs in at 3,339 lbs, the V-6 at 3,435 lbs and the V-8 at 3,685 lbs. In comparison, the outgoing V-6 Camaro weighed 3,729 lbs and the outgoing V-8 model was a hefty 3,908 lbs.
