Rumors of a third Audi crossover—possibly with electric drive—have risen and fallen since 2006, with prototypes even tested back in 2011. Now, it looks like the new crossover, likely to be called Q6, is back in the works.

According to Autocar, an image of the upcoming Audi Q6 has been shown during Audi board member Ulrich Hackenberg’s speech at the company's annual press conference.

Hackenberg said, in his official speech transcript, that the new “battery-powered sports activity vehicle” will sit in the “large premium segment” and offer an electric driving range of “more than 500 km” (310 miles).

A “new, very attractive design” is also promised, and will be the standard bearer for future e-tron vehicles from Audi. Hackenberg promises we “will hear and see more of this before the end of the year.”

With its Q6 name, the new vehicle is likely to get a more coupe-like design, the better to do battle with BMW’s X6 and Mercedes-Benz’s GLE Coupe. At the same time, the all-electric drive train will make it a competitor to Tesla’s upcoming Falcon-doored Model X.
