Mercedes-Benz has a home in the United States, and it's been in New Jersey since 1972. That is set to change, however, as the German automaker has confirmed it will be moving its local headquarters to Atlanta, Georgia later this year.

Mercedes’ U.S. team will relocate from its current facility in Montvale, New Jersey, to a temporary facility in Atlanta's Central Perimeter on an interim basis. The automaker will eventually construct a new, state-of-the-art headquarters expected to be completed in early 2017. The first staff should be relocated by July.

The move, which will affect approximately 1,000 employees, will be phased to help minimize any disruption to business operations. Several operational areas will remain in both Montvale and Robbinsville, New Jersey, however.

Part of the reason for the move is to place the headquarters closer to the ever-growing Southeast customer base as well as the port in Brunswick, Georgia which Mercedes already uses. The new site is also close to the Mercedes plant in Alabama, which now accounts for half of the automaker's vehicles sold in the U.S.

It also doesn't hurt that Atlanta is home to a massive airport, is situated in a state that offers strong incentives for companies, and there's already another automaker in the neighborhood. Porsche has called Georgia home for many number of years, and the sports car and sporty-ish SUV builder is planning to renew its investment in the area with a large new facility. Incidentally, Porsche is already Mercedes' neighbor back in Germany.

So get ready Delta, it looks like you're going to have a lot of new Diamond-status members joining the ATL queue lines.
