Mazda has confirmed plans to debut a new model at the 2016 New York Auto Show taking place later this month.

No details have been provided other than this being a “world premiere” and a car that will “blow the lid off.”

That latter descriptor suggests that the car in question may be a new MX-5 Miata Power Retractable Hard Top.

The fourth-generation MX-5 Miata, the ND to all the hardcore fans, is only available as a soft-top convertible but previous generations of the popular Mazda sports car have spawned additional variants including one with a retractable hard-top roof and even one with a fixed roof.

While a proper coupe might not make much sense—if it’s not a roadster, is it really a Miata at all?—Mazda has a darn good reason to introduce the PRHT option. First offered for 2007, the PRHT option has been taken up by around half of all Miata buyers.

We should have all the details soon as the New York Auto Show starts March 23. In the meantime, visit our dedicated hub to learn about some of the other vehicles set to appear.
