BMW announced the list price of its i8 plug-in hybrid sports car some time ago, but now we know how much it will actually cost to get behind the wheel once various options and trim lines are taken into account. At its very least, that's $135,700, plus a standard BMW $950 destination fee—but the car's first owners will be paying a bit more than that.
According to BMW Blog, all initial BMW i8 arrivals—listed as 2014 models—will include a special 'Pure Impulse World' trim package, that costs an extra $10,800. That's the price you pay for early adoption it seems, though the package does come with a healthy list of equipment including perforated grey leather, i8 script on the headrests, BMW i blue seatbelts, leather-edged floor mats and a leather engine/trunk cover, black brake calipers with BMW i blue detailing, and a neat zirconium oxide ceramic coating to the gear selector.
That should help the i8 stand out from the other ten percent of i8s following this initial allocation, which are all in 'Tera World' trim. This itself is a $3,000 package, once again including the shiny blue seatbelts and also including 20-inch alloy wheels and full LED headlights. The planned laser headlights are expected sometime in the fall, though it hasn't been made clear whether the first i8s hitting the streets will include the technology.

All i8s, including entry-level 'Giga World' models, come with a roster of equipment including Dynamic Damper Control, Park Distance Control, heated seats, cruise, automatic climate control and Harman/Kardon Premium Sound. A 'larger-capacity fuel tank' is also included on the car's price list. Interiors can be trimmed in various shades of leather, while six different exterior finishes are available. Several of these differ only in the choice of exterior accents the owner selects—BMW i blue, or a silver 'frozen metallic' shade. Owners selecting the Crystal White Pearl Metallic paintwork will pay $1,800 extra.
There is no variation in powertrain between the models—that remains the standard 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and front-mounted electric motor setup. The former produces a healthy 231 horsepower despite its small capacity, while front-drive traction is aided by smooth delivery from the 98 kW (131 horsepower) electric motor. No EPA economy figures have been revealed, but the car's all-electric range is rated at 23 miles in Europe. Deliveries in the U.S. begin August 17.
