Test mules for Bentley’s new SUV due in 2016 have just started testing on public roads, and now the British automaker has released a teaser video offering a glimpse at the design of the final version.
A previous teaser image confirmed that designers have implemented some changes to the original look, first previewed on 2012’s controversial EXP 9 F concept, with the headlights now made up by four main units instead of the concept’s two. The latest video adds some depth to the previous image, revealing an elegant shape designed in line with Bentley’s ‘hewn from solid’ theme.
The new SUV is promised to be the most powerful and luxurious SUV on the market. Power in base trim is expected to come from Bentley’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, while a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W-12 will remain an option. Bentley has also confirmed that a plug-in hybrid option will be offered before the end of 2017.
Underpinning the vehicle will be the SUV version of the Volkswagen Group’s next-generation MLB Evo platform that debuts in the 2015 Q7 and, in shortened form, will eventually appear in the next-generation versions of the Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg and a new SUV from Lamborghini based on 2012’s Urus concept.
Bentley anticipates a minimum annual sales volume of 3,000 SUVs, which would make it the marque’s most popular model. It’s too early to talk pricing but don’t expect much change from $200,000.
