Mazda will provide us with a first look at the design of its next-generation 2 subcompact with a striking concept version at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show next month. Called the Hazumi, the Japanese word for “bound” or “spring up,” the concept’s lines are said to convey a wild animal ready to leap.

The concept’s lines are also in keeping with Mazda’s Kodo design language. As this sole teaser image reveals, the Hazumi closely resembles present Mazda models like the latest 3 and 6 but with a slightly sportier look.

Few details are known about the next Mazda 2, but the new subcompact, which once again should be offered as a hatch and a sedan, should be revealed by the end of the year or in early 2015. The car will be the latest to adopt Mazda’s Skyactiv principles of lightweight design and downsized engines, and may be the first recipient of a new 1.5-liter diesel engine Mazda also plans to present in Geneva.

Stay tuned for more details on the Mazda Hazumi concept and new engine following their reveal at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show on March 4. In the meantime, head to our dedicated hub for our full coverage of the event.
