2014 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Convertible

The all-new 2015 Ford Mustang is just around the corner, so that means the current, fifth-generation car will soon be bowing out of the market. One of the last of these, the final 2014 Shelby GT500 Convertible to be built, could be yours as Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] will be auctioning off the car to help raise funds for charity.

The rights to the build slot for the car will be auctioned off at the Hot August Nights classic car event taking place this week in Reno, Nevada, and all proceeds from the sale will go to benefit the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), an organization championed by motorsport legend Parnelli Jones. The 1963 Indy 500 winner will even be present at the auction.

Since the car is yet to be built, the winning bidder will be able to choose any interior, exterior and stripe color combination offered by Ford on its 2014 Shelby GT500 Convertible. Additionally, Jones will apply his signature to the car.

With Ford expected to drop the Shelby name from its range-topping, SVT-enhanced 2015 Mustang, we may never again see a Shelby GT500 from Ford, so the winning bidder of this final 2014 example will soon have a little piece of history to call his or her own. It also means that we’re likely to see the car sell for significantly more than its $60,445 sticker.

All 2014 Shelby GT500s come with Ford’s supercharged 5.8-liter V-8, good for 662 horsepower and 613 pound-feet of torque. If you’re wondering what that feels like behind the wheel, be sure to read our First Drive report of the equally-potent 2013 model.

The Blue Oval has been quite charitable of late; in the past week it also auctioned off a U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds-inspired 2014 Mustang GT, which helped raise $398,000 for the EAA Young Eagles young pilot training program.
