2014 Volkswagen Beetle GSR Priced From $29,995

Follow Nelson

The Volkswagen Beetle is a fun little car, especially in Turbo form. The name changes from Beetle Turbo to Beetle R-Line this year, but the fun is the same--except for the addition of the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle GSR.

Unveiled at this year's Chicago Auto Show, the Beetle GSR starts with the Beetle R-Line's turbocharged 210-horsepower four-cylinder (as well as its other upgrades) and adds a unique look in a bright yellow and black color scheme.

But how much will the Gelb-Schwarzer Renner run you? A cool $31,095 to start if you opt for the dual-clutch DSG gearbox, or $29,995 with the six-speed manual. VW didn't indicate whether that pricing includes destination fees.

For a car that hits 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, tops out at 130 mph, and offers two-plus-two seating, that price puts the Beetle GSR a bit of a no-man's land. The Scion FR-S is just as quick, more fun to drive, and less expensive. The 2013 BMW 320i is nearly as quick and more fuel efficient--as well as more spacious and luxurious--at just $33,445.

In other words, there are many alternatives.

If you want a limited edition car (just 3,500 will be built) with a unique look and feel, a rich history, and practical daily driver manners, however, the Beetle GSR might just be the right mix. That is, if you don't end up with the Beetle TDI.
