It was only yesterday that we learned Bugatti and its 267.8-mph capable Veyron Super Sport
had been stripped of its land speed record
by Guinness World Records, due to the cars being sold to the public having their top speed limited to 258 mph
for safety reasons.
Bugatti responded with a new teaser image (reproduced below), along with the statement, “It’s almost time for us to share the latest example of exceptional Bugatti performance.”
Today, images purported to be of the new Bugatti model, a special edition Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, have leaked via Chinese website Weibo
According to World Car Fans
, the new special edition is called the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse WRC, with the “WRC” in the name presumably being an acronym for World Record Convertible.
The Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse is already touted as the world’s fastest convertible, though its claimed 255-mph top speed has never been officially recognized by the officials at Guinness.
That isn’t said to be the case with the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse WRC. Reportedly, Bugatti allowed a customer by the name of Liu Xu to drive the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse WRC on the 5.6-mile straight of the Ehra-Lessien test track owned by the Volkswagen Group, where he posted a top speed of 254 mph.
If there were Guinness officials on hand for the event, the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse WRC should now become, officially, the world’s fastest convertible.
For those unfamiliar with the Grand Sport Vitesse
, it is essentially the open top version of the Veyron Super Sport. It features unique body work and a 1,200-horsepower version of the Veyron’s quad-turbocharged, 16-cylinder 8.0-liter engine.
Stay tuned for an update, as Bugatti plans to announce its latest performance offering in the very near future.
