Son of racing legend Dan Gurney and prominent racer in his own right, Alex Gurney regularly races the Gainsco/Bob Stallings No. 99 car--known as the Red Dragon--in the Grand Am series' Daytona Prototype class. Here, we see the car and Gurney (the younger) in action on track at the Circuit of the Americas.
Motor Authority was there for the first lap ceremonies, and we got to see this car up close. It's a work of racing art, meticulously built to exacting standards yet just as bare-bones as the rules and the pace of the Daytona Prototype class will allow.
As you look over Gurney's shoulder along this lap of the circuit, consider the fact that what you see isn't much less than what Gurney sees--and he's driving at the limit in a car that weighs about 2,200 pounds and generates about 500 horsepower.
