It is only a matter of time until Jaguar transfers the 550-horsepower version of its supercharged V-8 from the gorgeous
F-Type R Coupe
to the equally stunning F-Type convertible
. And it looks like that may have just happened, as we have the first spy shots of an F-Type convertible prototype that’s believed to be running the more potent powerplant of the F-Type R Coupe.
As the spy shots confirm, the prototype has a more aggressive splitter attached to its front bumper. It also appears that the rear spoiler is bigger than the one fitted to the existing V-8-powered F-Type convertible, the F-Type V8 S. Finally, it looks like the prototype is wearing the F-Type’s available carbon-ceramic brake discs and 20-inch wheels.
The engine for R-spec F-Types is a 5.0-liter V-8, supercharged to the tune of 550 horsepower and 501 pound-feet of torque. Matched to an eight-speed ZF automatic, the engine should spirit the F-Type convertible from 0-60 mph in around 4.0 seconds and see it reach a governed top speed of close to 186 mph.
Other performance upgrades should include a configurable dynamics system to adjust the steering, gear shift, suspension and throttle settings, as well as an electronic differential with torque vectoring.
The new model should simply be labeled an F-Type R, and we’re likely to see the car for the first time at either the 2014 Paris Auto Show in October or the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show the following month. It will be the most expensive model in the F-Type range (unless an R-S is launched), likely commanding a price just above $100k. The 2015 F-Type R Coupe is priced from $99k.
Note, Jaguar is also believed to be testing an F-Type prototype fitted with the automaker's new Ingenium four-cylinder engine and even an all-wheel-drive system. You can see photos of the prototype here
