Every open-top Porsche model ever built, from the 1948 Porsche 356 Cabriolet to the newly-redesigned 2013 Porsche Boxster, has had a certain spirit about it. There have always been faster open-roof cars, and more luxurious open-roof cars, yet somehow none manage to deliver the essence of a Porsche roadster.

That message is delivered well in this new video from Porsche, that features rare archival footage of vintage Porsches in competition. The legendary Porsche 550 Spyder features prominently in the video, as Porsche has worked hard over the years to link the 550 to the Boxster.

We’re not sure that’s giving the Boxster its due, as the car is more than capable of standing on its own, outside the shadow of its grandfather. The 2013 Boxster, due in North American showrooms soon, looks to be even more impressive than the model it replaces.

It’s grown in size while losing weight and gained power while increasing fuel economy. Sure, the base price has increased by $1,400, but so have the car’s capabilities. If you’re in the market for an open-top sports car, we say the new Boxster and Boxster S are well worth your consideration.
