The current Audi TT might not seem like it's all that long in the tooth--the TT RS, after all, just made it to the U.S. last summer, bringing the RS brand back to us along with it.

But already Audi is at work on the next generation of the TT, and these are the latest images of the 2014 model's test mules.

Since they're test mules, they still look more or less identical to the current car.

The interior of these mules was completely covered, however, indicating there will be some significant design changes in the cabin.

Looking very closely, you might spot the slightly longer wheelbase, too, shown by modifications to the fender location and front quarter panels. At the rear, the roughed-in exhaust pipes hint at upgrades to the engines, which means more power or, at the least, more efficiency, is on tap.

Recent reports have also hinted that the next TT, which will likely be based on the recently unveiled Modular Transverse Matrix platform, will be lighter through more generous use of aluminum in the chassis, and will offer upgraded luxury elements in the cabin. Both coupe and roadster variants are expected to remain, as are front- and all-wheel drive models.

We'll keep you posted on all of the latest news and info on the next round of the Audi TT, including more spy shots, as they develop. For now, expect the test mules to run for several more months, with the first prototypes of the 2014 model hitting the test tracks late this year before a debut at a major auto show sometime in 2013.
