Admit it: Volvo probably isn’t the first brand that comes to mind when you’re pondering performance cars or performance upgrades to existing cars.
Volvo
tuning partner Polestar is looking to change that, and the company is about to launch a line of performance software for 2008 and later Volvo C30, C70 and S40 models with five-cylinder turbo (T5) engines.
For $1,295, your Volvo dealer will upgrade your car’s ECU, netting you an additional 23 horsepower and 29 pound-feet of torque in the process. Fuel economy remains unchanged, but here’s the best part: so does your manufacturer’s warranty, eliminating the risk of an aftermarket tune creating later warranty issues.
Polestar has been Volvo’s performance partner since 1996, and is perhaps best known for building Volvo’s race cars and for tuning the
2012 S60 T6 R-Design, which is the “naughtiest” of the Swedish automaker’s
“Naughty Volvo” S60 models.
Adding tuner software that can be installed by Volvo dealers to its portfolio will help grow the Polestar brand, and may even attract a different kind of customer into Volvo showrooms.
Polestar is also working on tuning software for the manual-trans-equipped Volvo V50 AWD station wagon, and expects to have this to market soon.
