If you carpool you might occasionally allow yourself to feel a little smug as you sail past the lines of gridlocked traffic every morning on the way to work.

Would that sense of satisfaction abate if we told you that a new app could even earn you money for carpooling? Didn't think so. You'll be glad to hear then that a new service called Zebigo lets you do just that.

Carpoolers can create a profile on Zebigo's website which then matches riders and drivers by route and profile. To reassure people you're not an axe-wielding maniac, spiritual healer or any other potentially unfavorable passenger users can opt in to a background check. Unfortunately, it won't reveal whether your carpool partners drive like a moonshine runner or not, so you'll have to trust your instinct on that one.

For every trip you carpool, passengers can reimburse the driver for gas through a cashless payment system. 49 cents of this goes to Zebigo for each trip, but the company reckons that over a 13-mile trip you could see $5, so it should cover your gas expenses.

Zebigo founder and CEO Mark Russell says it's been designed specifically with commuters in mind: "they can reduce their costs for gas, parking, and maintenance," though you can make use of it if you're carsharing on the way to sporting events and concerts, too. It's already available to Washington state residents and it should roll out nationally next year.

If that empty lane wasn't enough to tempt you into carpooling, does getting paid for it make you want to car-share? Let us know below, or via our Twitter and Facebook pages.
