More Details On Cadillac's Planned RWD Flagship Sedan: Report

Cadillac XTS Platinum Concept

Cadillac's plans to build a large rear-wheel drive flagship have surfaced before, and the drumbeat continues to sound.

The project was originally shelved during GM's bankruptcy, but as the company re-emerged, it was green-lighted by the brass.

According to a report in Car And Driver, Cadillac is looking to build a rear-wheel drive flagship sedan to compete with Mercedes-Benz's S-Class, Audi's A8, and BMW's 7-Series

The new platform will be dubbed Omega and be separate from the CTS or upcoming ATS. All-wheel drive will likely be available, with available V-6 or V-8 engines. A hybrid should be available, but a diesel likely won't. The car should arrive in 2014 as a 2015 model.

Cadillac brass likely realizes that a stretched version of the front-wheel drive XTS won't cut it in the fight with the German marques.

To that end, we'd expect plenty of technology goodies and luxury perks to go along with an interior that will be stuffed with high-end materials.

A slightly sillier rumor is that GM might use the same platform to create a super-luxury Cadillac that would target Rolls-Royce. This seems highly dubious, but the idea of an American super-luxury barge rolling up to the valet stands at high-end hotels does make us daydream a bit.

An Omega full-size seems a safe bet. The super-luxury model? Probably not, but it's fun to dream.

  1. Great idea, Caddy did a great job with the CTS, so this might be a very competitive model
