2011 Jeep Wrangler
Michael Manley, Jeep president and CEO, apparently has had a 6.4-liter Hemi 392 V-8 engine dropped into a Jeep Wrangler by American Expedition Vehicles for "executive evaluation" of a possible future production vehicle. We like the idea, just as we did in 2007 when Jeep unveiled the Wrangler Ultimate concept.
Of course, those with even longer memories will remember the AMC days when a 5.0-liter V-8 was tucked into the CJ5 and CJ7, predecessors to the modern Wrangler. Those experiments were a bit more terrifying and a bit less awesome than we expect a Hemi-powered Wrangler to be, however. Nonetheless, there's precedent for this formula, so despite its proximity to April Fool's Day, there's at least the aroma of possibility here.
Should the 470-horsepower Hemi 392 find its way into a Wrangler, we can expect a range of appearance and options tweaks, though if the SEMA concept is any indicator, not much else will need to change. A slight lift, larger wheels and fat mud-worthy tires are possible upgrades, though likely as an option package. According to the drive notes from the source of the new report, however, a lower, more street-oriented (SRT8-style?) suspension may be in order: if you floor it in third, the vehicle "will go sideways."
We'll keep our eyes on this development, but for now, check out the full story at the link below.
