We know BMW is working on a new eco supercar to take on the likes of the Audi R8 and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, both of which will be spawning their respective all-electric versions, but apart from a tentative release date of October 2013 we don’t have too many solid details concerning the new car.
All is not lost, however, as BMW has given us a preview with its daring Vision EfficientDynamics concept car of 2009, and then followed it up with the unveiling of the first working prototype for the final production version last year. Now we have what appears to be a ‘closer-to-production’ prototype of BMW’s upcoming eco supercar, captured while on a photo shoot at a race track in Abu Dhabi.
Never before seen details appearing on the latest prototype include a new hood and revised doors. Otherwise, most of the dramatic styling seen on the original Vision EfficientDynamics concept has carried over untouched.
Moving into the domain of speculation, the new model is expected to be called the i8, a name that has allegedly been trademarked by BMW and one that presages the names of the rest of the automaker’s eco lineup, presumably based around the core framework: iX, where X is the model series.
As BMW’s flagship, pricing won’t be cheap, with early estimates hovering around the $200,000 mark. This is not surprising given its likely competition and expected plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
