First Look: 2012 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet

2010 Cobra Jet Mustang

We've already brought you a preview of Ford's 2012 Cobra Jet Mustang--a purpose-built drag-racer--and now we have the official skinny from Ford.

Priced at $91,900 for the entry-level version and $103,980 for a fully-loaded model, the 2012 Cobra Jet will be available in three colors: Winner White, Grabber Blue, and Race Red.

Ford plans on building just 50 of these turn-key drag racers, which is intended to compete in NHRA Stock and Super Stock classes but will also be eligible to compete in races held by other sanctioning bodies.

The car comes with a race-prepped transmission, drag-race ready shocks and springs, a certified roll cage, manual steering and brakes, a fuel-cell, and a return-style fuel system.

Power comes from a 5.4-liter V-8 available with one of two turbochargers, and Ford has not yet released horsepower figures. The car also has special black wheels and a new tire compound.

The Cobra Jet will be built on the same production line as the regular street Mustang, and do-it-yourself types will be able to buy a Mustang Competition Roller that comes sans powertrain. It's also possible to build a Cobra Jet using a donor car and parts from the Ford Racing catalog.

  1. 91K for a Mustang! Since only 50 will be produced, I'm guessing this one is for the Barrett-Jackson crowd. NO Mustang is worth near/over 100k. Give me a 2011 GT, ported Ford Racing heads, 4.10 gears with the same Whipple-charger, and I'll give you a 10sec car.

  2. This 2012 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet is SERIOUSLY NICE! I love Mustangs and this is the best that ford has ever shown in my opinion. I have a feeling that they are going to make it even better as time goes by. But how much is this, wonderful, amazing, car?
