And while the Audi TT GT4 concept is more full-blown racer than streetable, it does demonstrate the immense potential of the TT RS road car, as the GT4 is based heavily on that model. In fact, the engine is practically identical. Producing 335 horsepower, the direct-injected turbo five in the TT RS inherited its cylinder head from its V-10 cousin residing in the Lamborghini Gallardo’s engine bay.
To get to TT RS spec, Audi engineers also added direct-injection, an intercooler, and a turbocharger with up to 17 psi of boost. The result: a 7000-rpm redline, and nearly twice the power of the naturally aspirated five-cylinder engine. For the GT4, said power is routed to the ground through Audi’s S-tronic gearbox, with a locking differential.
The styling of the GT4 is very close to that of the street car as well. In fact, the front and rear aprons are straight off of the road version. Naturally, some changes were engendered to pare weight. Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic is used for the hood, doors and trunk lid. Also, the windows are made from plastic. Add a roll cage and a reinforced fuel tank and voila, you’re ready to go racing.
Available for the 2012 season, the TT GT4 was debuted in Shanghai at the final race of the DTM season.
Pricing will start at around $160,000.
