Audi's smallest car may not be making the trans-Atlantic swim, but we're entitled to a little green-eyed ogling of the hotter S1 version of the Audi A1, spied testing almost completely undisguised in these photos of an Audi S1 prototype/test mule testing on the Nordschleife.

While it's not as extreme as the A1 Quattro, it won't be as severely limited in production, either--just 333 units of the A1 Quattro will be built. The Audi S1, though it has been on the table for at least a year, is thought to be due for debut in late 2013 or early 2014, and will instead be a widely-available performance upgrade on the standard A1.

Unfortunately, that means it's still not going to be available here in the U.S. Even more unfortunately, it's likely to pack more than 200 horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a detuned version of the A1 Quattro's powerplant. That should yield 0-60 mph times in the six-second range, and a top speed around 140 mph.

We also expect the S1 to get quattro all-wheel drive, its own S-line trim and appearance enhancements, and a sport-tuned suspension.

We'll keep you updated as the situation with the Audi S1 develops, despite its current (and likely permanent) status as forbidden fruit.

  1. This is a great compact car and it is a shame that it is not coming to the states.
