Before any road trip it is a good idea to take your car into a local service station and have them do a 100-point inspection (click here for service stations in your area). Some good bets are your local Goodyear or Firestone franchises or if you have a national auto repair chain like a Pepboys, then at least you have some customer service recourse if you are dissatisfied. Below are some things to make sure they check:

  • Tires—Tread depth, air pressure and tire balance
  • Fluids—Power steering fluid, brake fluid, radiator fluid, differential, transmission and washer fluid
  • Get and oil change
  • Wiper blades—have them checked for wear

If you are mechanically inclined, you can check some of these things on your own using your owner’s manual as a guide. For the oil change, look for specials at your local auto parts store on do-it-yourself kits or if look for service center coupons in your local paper. With the above tips, you should be ready to hit the road and make the college memories of a lifetime.

  1. Great Tips Jonathan. It's important that before the upcoming holidays college students go over this checklist again. So many college students neglect their cars all year and find out once it's too late that they needed oil or that their tires weren't in the best of shape for a long road trip. Better safe than sorry.
