Apple's iPhone Can Now Unlock and Start Your Car

Yet another automotive utility has hit the Apple App Store. This week, a company called Directed Electronics released an innovative tool for drivers with Viper security systems installed on their automobiles.

Its called Viper SmartStart and it gives each iPhone user the ability to remotely lock and unlock a Viper-enabled car. It also has the ability to remotely start the cars engine and unlatch the trunk. The iPhone app acts much like the Viper Alarms key fob---only in smartphone form.

The SmartStart program is a free download for the iPhone nation however; the complete and compatible Viper Alarm system will cost you around $500. If you already have a Viper alarm system installed, it will only cost you $300 to get the necessary equipment to make it iPhone ready.

Then there is the annual Viper/iPhone subscription cost of $29.99, which gives your alarm system a cell phone-like signal to work with the SmartStart application.

Now this may all sound like overkill for a program that does the same thing as your original/free key fob service, but this system will give you the ability to lock, unlock and start your car from virtually anywhere (as long as you have sufficient cellular service).

SmartStart will also provide a panic button feature to activate your cars alarm from an iPhone. This makes for endless pranking possibilities in itself.

  1. I wonder when one of these will come for just your normal car remote locking system. Especially for rotary engines like the Mazda RX7 and RX8 etc, you need to warm them up before driving and this would be ideal.
