The Alcyone SVX, known outside of Japan as the Subaru SVX, is a mid-sized GT coupe that was sold by Subaru from 1991 to 1997. It was the brand’s first major attempt to enter the luxury/performance car market but its styling failing to excite most buyers in the segment and the performance from its naturally-aspired engine was nothing special either.

Total sales of the car topped a little over 25,000 units worldwide before the model was pulled. While not quite the success Subaru was hoping for, a successor to the car is reportedly in the works.

According to a new report, Subaru is working on a new sports coupe based on the recently revealed Hybrid Tourer Concept. The production version will likely share the concept’s hybrid drivetrain and possibly even its gullwing door design.

A Subaru insider said the car would target high-end performance vehicles and could be priced as high £40,000 (approximately $63,196).

  1. The SVX H-6 was a great engine with lots of HP compared to other cars of the mid-90's. This was the largest engine produced by Subaru until 2008, with 230HP. 0-60 was 7.3 for the 3550lb car. It also won the Winter Alcan Rally in 1991. The odd styling and the high price from a traditionally 'cheap cars and built to stay that way' company sealed the demise of the SVX. A lesson that other companies continue to learn.

I know of one very odd reason this car got a bit of notoriety for it not being accepted by a lot of Aussie buyers and it's that this car "they say" are mostly bought by gay men ( not that there's anything wrong with that ) but it sure has stuck into most minds which in turn affected it's slow sales during those years. I do think it was way ahead of it's time in terms of design and aesthetics which is why it still looks quite awesome today.

    Wow - You mean my counterparts in Australia don't all drive Miatas and Saab Convertibles like we all do here?
    I wonder what the Lesbians and blonde cheerleaders down there drive instead of Outbacks and V6 Camaros?
    Who knew that their stereotypes were so different from ours?

  4. I love the SVX, but I hope the new one doesn't look anything like the concept. They still look exotic nearly two decades later, and turn heads when one drives by. Actually, judging by Subaru's corporate styling of late, I hope they don't produce it. How do you replace an original?

  5. I'm always disappointed when non-SVX owners try to write reviews on these cars. The SVX wasn't the lackluster ugly duckling you describe it as. It was intentionally built in low numbers, and the value of the Yen over the dollar eventually meant this car went the way of the RX7 and 3000GT. Only the NSX survived the mid-90s Yen rally. Performance (as mentioned by another comment) is very good, given the specs, and mine regularly keeps up with my friend's 6sp Legacy 2.5 GT Limited.
    As for this concept and rumor; let's hope it's not true. Any modern SVX woul have to again be designed by Giugiaro of ItalDesign (like the original), would have to be powered by the company's naturally aspirated H6, and simply could not be a hybrid or diesel - if it is to be a Neuvo SVX.
