Officials from Mercedes Benz have just announced that they are planning to launch the first model that runs exclusively on hydrogen. The new Mercedes Benz B-Class F-Cell will enter series production at the end of this year and will be delivered to customers at the beginning of 2010.
In order to create this model, the engineers from Mercedes started from a standard B-Class version, and mounted the special tank and fuel cells in the floor. The oxygen and the hydrogen then react and produce electric current, which is stored in Li-ion batteries. The car comes with a 136 HP electric engine, which has a torque of 290Nm. This enables the B-Class F-cell to reach a top speed of 170 km/h.
The B-Class F-Cell will have an autonomy of 400 km, and recharging the hydrogen cells only takes 3 minutes. Obviously, the car will have 0 CO2 emissions, and the only thing that is going to come out of the exhaust pipe is water.
