Report: NHTSA pulls the plug on part of GM's plan to auction Heritage cars at Barrett-Jackson

General Motors’ cash struggles are widely known by now, but the Detroit carmaker's accountants had found a creative way to produce some income - auctioning off more than 250 new and old production models and concepts that up until now have been admired in the company’s Heritage Museum Collection. But the NHTSA, apparently afraid buyers would try to register the many salvage titled cars for the street, has put a stop to the sale - but not of all the cars.

Only cars that were never production vehicles or titled as such will be prohibited from sale, it seems, with the already streetable vehicles to roll across the auction ramp this weekend. That means GM will still be able to raise some cash, but until it can resolve the NHTSA's concerns, the highest-dollar one-off and concept vehicles will remain in GM's possession.

Even though both Barrett-Jackson and GM have been up front about the status of the cars sold - to buyers, the government and each other - the NHTSA is afraid many of the cars will still be attempted for street registry, according to Sports Car Market. That could pose a major hazard, since many of the concept and pre-production cars in the 252-car lot never met any sort of safety certification.

Cars up for sale would have included a wide range of cars that have played important roles in GM's history, as well as some more bizarre lots, such as the 1990 Buick Bolero concept car.

Other notable lots include a 1918 Cadillac, the 1998 Popemobile used to transport the Catholic pontiff, and a veritable smorgasbord of Corvette specials, such as the 2004 Indy Pace Car Corvette and a number of 1989 ZR-1s. For those of you who like to get sideways, GM was also selling off its 2006 Pontiac Solstice GXP drifting car sponsored by Red Bull energy drinks. The drifter, which was driven by 2008's drifting champion Rhys Millen, puts out over 500hp (373kW) or roughly double the output of the standard Solstice GXP.

If any of these sound enticing, you'll just have to go and see for yourself which make the grade and which are put on hold by the government.

Cars on the list to be sold at the auction (but not necessarily approved for sale) include:

    Bad stuff?

  2. Many of these will fetch huge numbers before the sold sticker gets slapped onto the winshield. Still won't help out GM, but it's cool for the collectors. Can't wait to see some of them on tv.

  4. This museum is a shinning example if why GM is in trouble. At the Honda museum they have two cars. A 1981 Civic and a 1989 CRX. Both still more reliable then most GM cars and both more actractive then most GM cars(Ponitac Aztek??)

  6. What about the numerous concept/autorama cars B-J has sold in the past? Why wasn't the NHTSA worried about those? I am seriously questioning their motives now.
