Following a lrecent report that GM’s plans for a high-performance Camaro Z28 had been canceled and the Camaro Convertible was on hold, comes a little good news but also some bad. The good news is that the Convertible is back on track for a March 2011 launch, while the bad news – you guessed it – is that the Z28 is looking less and less likely to ever come to fruition.

Cost cutting at GM and fears that the German supplier of the Camaro Convertible’s roof mechanism was about to go under led to last week’s claims that the car was put on hold indefinitely. However, the supplier in question is still in business and has a new agreement signed with GM.

Furthermore, GM spokesman Terry Rhadigan has confirmed to Automotive News that production of the highly anticipated drop-top is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2011. He went on to concede that this will be a few months later than the originally planned late 2010 launch.
"We always thought it would be one year after the coupe," he said. "Instead we are going two."

As for the Z28, GM was planning to add the 550hp (410kW) 6.2L V8 engine from the Cadillac CTS-V to the Camaro’s engine bay in an effort to destroy any chances of the Dodge Challenger SRT8 and Shelby Mustang GT claiming the title of ‘modern-day muscle car king’. Sadly, the Z28’s expected $50 million development price tag, impending 35.5mpg CAFE implications, and niche status meant it was virtually dead from the start.

  6. Damn you Obama! Ive been holding out ordering just for the hope that the Z28 production would be anuounced. I cant believe they wont produce it, R & D ($50million??) everything is basically there from the Caddy, drivetrain wise. Just a little tweek and strenthening here and there to accomadate the added torque and a little extra bubble to the hood, good to go :)

  12. As usual,GM has to make it harder for customers than it has to be.Why couln't they use an AMERICAN company to design and build the convertible top thereby keeping jobs here in the US,and maybe shortening the time it would take for the drop top to come out?--Duh!

  13. What? No hard top convertible? You can even get a Mazda Miata in a hard top convertible. Once again, GM cheaps out. They missed out on a sale to me... and probable to lots of others.

  15. Everybody else has had a ragtop on the market for years, but noooooo, not Chevy. They've blown any chance that had of keeping me as a loyal customer by dragging their feet in coming out with the Camaro convertible.

  16. If Chrysler can make a great workable hard top convertible in the US, GM should be able to. Knuckleheads. how long do they think I am going to wait? Had to wait 6 months to get a Malibu LTZ. Nonsense.

  18. GMC did it again! They lost their market before they entered the market. GM is like an married 6o yr virgin because she always promised more than she would delivered. GM must think that the year is 1955 and GM can sell all it can produce. If GM wants stay alive which is doubtful (Death Wish) GM will have to deliver a full line of high quality products on day one. With this full line (Camaros) having Hard Tops, Hard Top Converts and a Really Hot Z28 which will be affordable to all. So get this Mr. GM Get your head out of your A---s and produce or KIA will eat your lunch!!!!

  19. This is going to be an incredible ride. GM has done a great job with the Camaro. Hopefully, they'll have the ZR8 after they see that the Camaro is a hot seller.

  25. PLEASE make a hard-top convertible. I have been holding out for one and if GM can't produce I will have to buy from a automaker that does produce! That's why people can't buy American, because American doesn't offer what Americans want.

  27. Everyone seems to forget that GM is busted, broken and just poorly managed... it is about volume not about anything else, what do you expect from a company managed by a bunch of banks and government Zars? Hope... And GM is fast approaching the same methods that should have closed them down the last time. I am tiered of my tax dollars going to brain dead people...
