Ford will battle it out with General Motors in the eco-technology stakes at this week’s L.A. Auto Show, with both companies planned to roll-out several new electric powered concepts. GM will be showcasing its new plug-in hybrid technology, while Ford will display a hydrogen fuel cell Explorer alongside the redesigned Escape Hybrid. The Explorer will have a range of 350 miles on a single fill-up of hydrogen, more than any fuel cell vehicle on the road.

The fuel cell Explorer prototype was partially funded by the US Department of Energy, and comes equipped with an AWS electric drivetrain, hydrogen storage tank and the regular six-speed auto transmission found in regular production models.

Ford currently has a fleet of 30 hydrogen-powered Focus fuel cell vehicles already on the road as part of a worldwide, seven-city program to conduct real-world testing of fuel cell technology. Other clean Fords include the PZEV emissions compliant Ford Fusion and Ford Focus and the 2008 Ford F-Series Super Duty with Ford Clean Diesel Technology.
