Mazda has released an official statement announcing that it will build its next generation small car in Japan only. Currently, the Mazda2 is built in Valencia, Spain, and Hiroshima, Japan, but Mazda’s intention is to consolidate production of the next B-car to Hiroshima in order to maximize the economies of scale and efficiencies that this would offer. Mazda has scheduled production of the next B-car to begin in 2007.
Ford Europe has confirmed that the move will not adversely affect staffing at the Valencia assembly plant, where volume will be maintained through higher production of existing models.
