VW Polo to spawn cabrio, coupe and MPV
Volkswagen is reportedly planning to expand its Polo range by adding
new cabrio, coupe and MPV versions of the regular small hatch. The new models will be based on the next-gen Polo due in 2009 and are aimed at widening the target market for the practical hatch. The new cabrio and coupe versions will be targeted at a younger market, while the
mini Polo MPV will be aimed at young families after a cheap runabout for city living.
The new cars will compete with popular models such as the
Ford Fusion and Fiat Idea, but will feature VW’s latest technology including DSG gearboxes, and efficient TSI engines. According to
What Car?, the dual-clutch transmission will be available with a 170hp TSI engine reserved for a new Polo GTi. Other powerplants include a new 64hp 1.2L unit, an 80hp 1.4L engine and a more powerful 1.6L mill. The diesel range will consist of a 69 and 84hp 1.4L motors and a 105hp 1.9L unit.
In addition to the conventional petrol and diesel models, VW will also offer a new
hybrid option. Due to the low cost of the Polo, the hybrid system is likely to a mild version that utilizes regenerative braking and electronically controlled components in similar fashion to BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology.

The mini MPV is logic because Skoda already has the Roomster, which is more like a panel van. Seat might get one B-segment cabrio too, so they should choose one of them. But I don't believe the coupé thing, there hasn't been any since the Tigra and Puma.
