Saab will be adding a new entry-level model to its lineup in the form of the 9-1 compact car, with the final production version set to arrive in 2010. In the meantime, Saab will roll out a highly-stylized concept version at next year’s London Motor Show in July. CEO Jan Ake Jonsson hinted at the development of the new baby Saab earlier this year, claiming, it will be targeted at premium small hatches like the BMW 1-series and Audi A3.

A GM insider has also revealed that the same hybrid system planned for the new Opel Astra will also be used in the future Saab. The new 9-1 is an important model for Saab as it could potentially be its highest volume. The car will be sold in global markets and will also be available with a hybrid option. The final version will be manufactured at a plant in Trollhatten, Sweden, and will be based on the new Astra-sized Delta platform.

Before the 9-1 arrives, Saab will launch a new 9-4X crossover model. Expect to see the crossover debut at next month’s Detroit Auto Show.
