General Motors Company [NYSE:GM] has used this week’s 2015 Consumer Electronics Show to tease its upcoming second-generation Chevrolet Volt. The new extended-range electric sedan was shown briefly during Chevy’s CES press preview on Sunday night and will be making its official debut in a week’s time at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show before going on sale later in the year as a 2016 model.
The car’s styling is much more aggressive than on the original Volt. This is particularly true in the case of the sculpted hood and taut surfacing, which GM design boss Ed Wellburn said was inspired by the lines of Chevy’s halo car, the Corvette.

Prototypes for the 2016 Volt have been spotted in the wild for over a year and Chevy has been dropping more and more information in recent months. Last October we received details on the car’s next-generation Voltec extended-range electric drivetrain, which is said to benefit from battery, electric motor and weight-saving improvements. A more-efficient gasoline engine has also been adopted for range-extending duties.
Performance figures are yet to be released but key metrics such as acceleration, driving range, fuel-efficiency and charging times should all see improvements compared to figures for the original Volt. We may also see a price reduction on the current 2015 Volt’s $35k pre-incentive price tag.
